Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries International Conference (QQML2010)

The 2nd Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries International Conference (QQML2010) is taking place in Chania, Crete, Greece, 25 - 28 May 2010. I did my presentation on Library research support at Wits yesterday and enjoyed the ensuing discussions around Research Commons, Postgraduate Commons & "do librarians really need subject knowledge?" The conversations today are on international efforts to standarize statistics. Interesting propositions included possibilities of dropping volume counts from the statistics libraries collect and capturing more on preservation, cooperation, open access & services for special user groups.

Scholary communication & new technologies
1141 days ago

This morning started with two very fulfilling engagements in the office (i) helping a senior member of staff to establish the credibity of a publisher offering to publish a thesis in order to widely disseminate the findings, (ii) reading two emails that helped me to answer one question that bothered me since a meeting with the e-Laerning team, i.e. is audio necessary in a webcast and online tutorials? The answers were divergent: (i)  you can do without audio because voice does not always come out the way it should ...as long as you keep the cast very short, plus or minus 3 minutes, and (ii) Daniel Gunnarsson, Jönköping’s Business and Economic Development Subject Librarian says "The possibility to embed webcasts and tutorials creates the kind of new picture and sound content I hope will make the guide more modern and attractive for younger users. ... basic things, such as accessing the databases is highly used." This is not necessarily bad ...choose an approach that best addresses your circumstances!

The flight route to Chania is proving to be quite circuitous. The best so far is to go through Dubai.

The major decisions today were:

  • We will proceed with training in the next two weeks to ease importation of subject portals into LibGuides.
  • Janet & Thuli will seek opportunities to incorporate "How tos" into KEWL.
  • Jo-Anne will give us revised statistics on ISI usage to help in deciding whether we need additonal licences over the current 8.
