EDIT's understanding of the Field of Educational Technology

The academic field of Educational Technology entails a number of knowledge practices related to ICTs in education and society. At bottom line, it is concerned with the development of the skills of student teachers seeking to integrate ICTs in their classrooms. As a conceptual home for postgraduate teaching and research, it straddles ‘eLearning’, which we take to mean teaching, learning and assessment using ICTs, as well as the philosophical, sociological and psychological study of digital technologies in education. As an expansive research field, it ranges across issues of knowledge, information, learning, minds, brains, machines, schools, and the network society – in short, the comprehensive theorization and study of modern technology in modern society.

On this understanding, 'Educational Technology' is much broader than 'eLearning', although the former incorporates the latter and takes from it its fundamental identity as a field of inquiry .
